Things to do in Downing’s

Atlantic Drive
Atlantic Drive is a short, but very scenic road around the Rosguill Peninsula. It is only 12 km long that you can walk/cycle or drive. The spectacular views across Sheephaven Bay to Horn Head at first and onto Trá na Rossan with its golden sandy beach. Further on is Melmore Head and views across to Fanad Head.Mevagh church graveyard is sign posted left where an old Latin cross and Ogham stone can be seen next to a ruined church. As you finish the Atlantic Drive you will arrive back at the Blue flag beach in Downing’s.
 
Mc Nutts Tweed
Located just walking distance from the hotel on Donegal's Wild Atlantic Way is Mc Nutts of Donegal. They have been producing some of the world's finest weaves for over 60 years. Every collection has been designed in- house taking inspiration from the rugged coastline and nature’s playground that surrounds them .They use only the very best quality wool, combined with excellent local craftsmanship. A visit to Mc Nutts of Donegal is a must when staying at the Downings Bay Hotel. Our bedroom throws have being custom made for us by Mc Nutts.
 
Doe Castle
Just a short drive from the hotel is Doe Castle in Sheephaven Bay, Stronghold of the Mac Sweeney Clan for about 200 years, it was in this castle that the survivors from the wrecks of the Spanish Armada were sheltered. First reference to the castle is in 1544, but  it probably dates back further, Well worth a visit. Guided tours are available in the summer months.
 
Fanad Lighthouse
Fanad lighthouse is a Signature Discovery point on Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way. The lighthouse is the second most Northerly lighthouse in the republic of Ireland and it's said that it's slightly bigger than the Eiffel Tower. The lighthouse has now been developed into a visitor center. Well worth a visit when staying at the Downings Bay Hotel.
 
Glenveagh National Park
Glenveagh Castle is a 19th Century, castellated mansion built as a hunting lodge between 1867 and 1873. It is set in 16,500 hectares in the Derryveagh Mountains’ large herd of red deer roams these mountains. With its famous gardens, regarded as one of Ireland's horticultural masterpieces it’s definitely worth a visit. Access to the Castle is by guided tour only .There are some excellent walking trails in the park starting at the visitor centre.
